Like you’re a leaf blowing in the wind, being tossed this way and that without any roots to ground you? I totally get it. I’ve been there. For a long time, I felt disconnected – from my past, my family, my culture. I was just going through the motions each day without much thought about where I came from or where I was headed.
But eventually I realized I wanted more. I wanted to feel anchored in a sense of identity. I wanted roots. So I started digging. Genealogy tests, conversations with relatives, researching family lore and customs. And you know what? It worked. I began piecing together my story. The more I learned, the more rooted I felt. Additionally, engaging in positive self-talk and clearing out negative internal narratives can reinforce a strong sense of self. It’s about finding stability within, regardless of external circumstances, and connecting with the essence of one’s being.
1. Self-Reflection: Looking Inward to Know Yourself
So you want to feel more connected to yourself, huh? I’ve been there. The truth is, self-reflection is the only way to gain true insight into who you are.
Take time for reflection. Set aside time each day to reflect on your thoughts and feelings. I like to journal for 15–30 minutes a day. It helps me process what’s going on internally and gain perspective. Ask yourself questions about what motivates you, what drains you, and what brings you joy. The more you understand yourself, the more rooted you’ll feel.
Examine your core values. What matters most to you? Your values are your inner compass, guiding how you live your life. Some of my core values are growth, authenticity, and compassion. Yours might be creativity, courage or family. Recognize your values and make sure your daily choices align with what really matters.
Face your fears. Our fears have a way of disconnecting us from ourselves. Take risks and do things that scare you, like public speaking, starting a new hobby or traveling somewhere unfamiliar. Start Your Day Right. How I start my moming sets the tone for the rest of my day. I wake up at the same time each day, around 6 AM, and begin with some light exercise like yoga or walking. After showering and getting dressed, I sit down for a healthy breakfast. This predictable pattern helps me feel grounded and ready to face whatever the day brings.
Take time for yourself. It’s easy to get caught up in work, chores, and social obligations and forget to recharge. I try to schedule in time each day just for myself. Some days I’ll read a book, go to the garden, or call a friend. Making self-care a priority has been essential for my well-being.
Reflect and Renew. At the end of the day, I like to reflect on what went well and renew my motivation for the next day. I jot down thoughts in a journal, review my calendar, and make a loose plan for tomorrow. This habit of reflection and renewal keeps me focused on my priorities and helps ensure I start each day with intention.

I grew up in a family that valued hard work, education and helping others. These core principles have shaped who I am today and guide how I live my life. When times get tough, I reflect on these values to help give me strength and direction.
Value hard work. My parents taught me from an early age that hard work and perseverance pay off. Nothing comes easy, so you have to work for what you want. I apply this to all areas of my life, from my career to relationships to personal goals. When a challenge arises, I don’t back down easily. Seek Knowledge. A thirst for learning has been instilled in me since childhood. I love reading, taking online courses and having conversations with interesting people. Continuous learning expands my mind and allows me to achieve more in life. When I feel stuck or uninspired, I crack open a book or start a new course. Feeding my mind with new ideas never fails to motivate and energize me.
Help Others Along the Way. Giving back to others through kindness, compassion and generosity is very important to me. Get Outside. One of the best ways I’ve found to reconnect with myself is by spending time outside in nature. When I can unplug from technology and escape from the busyness of everyday life, it’s easier to tap into my inner wisdom and gain a fresh perspective. Find a natural setting near you-a local park, hiking trail, beach or your own backyard-where you can sit quietly and observe your surroundings.
Slow Down and Pay Attention. Once you’re outside, intentionally slow down. Take deep breaths and relax into the present moment. Pay close attention to the little details in nature that you often miss: the rustling of leaves in the breeze, sunlight filtering through the trees, birds chirping and flying overhead. Focus your senses on the colors, sounds, smells and textures around you. This mindfulness practice helps shift your mind from the chatter of thoughts to an awareness of the beauty in the simple things.
Get Grounded. Spend some time with your bare feet on the earth. The energy from the ground has a balancing, calming effect. Feel the grass under your feet or dig your toes into the sand. Place your hands on the trunk of a tree and feel its solidity and strength. These small acts of connecting to the earth’s surface help you feel grounded and centered.
Reflect and journal. While outside, reflect on what you’re observing and any insights or feelings that surface. You might journal your thoughts or simply sit silently and let your mind wander. Pay attention to any messages or guidance that comes through. Spending reflective time in nature is a simple but powerful way to gain clarity and nurture your connection to yourself.
Getting outside in nature, slowing down and intentionally connecting with the earth helps me find my roots and discover what really matters. Make it a habit to unplug and go outside, even if just for a few minutes. Your mind, body and soul will thank you.
5. Practicing Mindfulness to Be Present
To feel more rooted in myself, I practice mindfulness techniques like meditation, deep breathing, and journaling. These help me slow down, focus on the present moment, and gain insight into my thoughts and feelings.
Meditating for Inner Quiet. Sitting in silence, I focus on my breath moving in and out. This basic meditation calms my mind and body, creating inner stillness. When intrusive thoughts arise, I gently bring my focus back to my breath. After meditating for even just 10 or 15 minutes a day, I feel more centered and better able to be fully present in each moment.
Deep Breathing for Awareness. Doing deep, slow belly breaths is a simple way to become more aware of myself. I find a quiet spot, close my eyes, and place one hand on my belly. I inhale through my nose so my lower abdomen pushes my hand out. Then I exhale through my mouth, feeling my belly sink back in. Focusing on each inhale and exhale helps shift my mind from the daily chatter to the present moment.
Journaling for Insight. Writing in a journal helps me gain valuable self-knowledge. I write whatever comes to mind, without censoring myself. This stream-of-consciousness writing often reveals thoughts or feelings I didn’t even know I had. Looking back over past journal entries, I can also see how much I’ve grown in my self- awareness and how being more rooted and present has enriched my life.
By developing a regular practice of mindfulness techniques, I’ve learned to slow down, avoid distractions, and appreciate each moment as it happens. Staying present and connected to myself gives me a sense of inner peace and balance that I can then extend out to my relationships and interactions with the world.
6. Expressing Your Creativity to Get Grounded
For me, tapping into my creativity is one of the best ways to feel rooted and connected. When I’m expressing myself through art, music, writing, or whatever creative outlet calls to me, I get into a flow state where I lose track of time. My inner critic quiets down, and I feel centered in the present moment.
Free Yourself from Perfection. The biggest block for many in expressing their creativity is the fear of not being good enough. I’ve learned to free myself from the need to be perfect. My art doesn’t have to be museum-worthy to be meaningful to me. Give yourself permission to create for the sheer joy of it, without judgment. Start with something simple like doodling, coloring, or journaling. Build up your confidence over time.
Find your medium. We all have unique ways of expressing ourselves. For some, it’s through visual art; for others, it’s through music, dance, poetry, or crafts. Don’t feel limited to the arts either; you could express your creativity through gardening, cooking, woodworking, or whatever excites you. Experiment with different mediums until you find one that makes you feel fully immersed and ignites your passion.

As with any habit, making time for creative expression takes conscious effort. Even setting aside just 30 minutes a day a few times a week can make a big difference. Find a space where you can focus without distraction. Put on some ambient music if it helps you relax and concentrate. Once you get into the flow, you may find that 30 minutes flies by and you want to keep going!
Nurturing your innate creativity can be profoundly grounding. By giving yourself permission to explore self-expression without judgment, you tap into the present moment and your authentic self. Make the time, find your medium, and let your creativity blossom. Staying rooted in your own creativity and passion will give you an inner stability that’s not easily shaken.
8. Setting Healthy Boundaries to Protect Your Energy
Being rooted in yourself means being cognizant of your own needs and limits. As an empath, I have a tendency to want to please others and put their needs first. But in doing so, I often end up feeling drained, spread too thin, and disconnected from myself. Over time, I’ve learned that setting healthy boundaries is key to staying grounded and protecting my energy.
Boundaries create space for you to nurture yourself. They allow you to say “no” without guilt, so you can devote your time and energy to the things and people that truly matter to you. Start by identifying your limits and non-negotiables. For me, I need at least 30 minutes of alone time each day to recharge, I won’t answer work emails after 6 pm, and I don’t lend money to friends or family.
Communicate your boundaries clearly and confidently. Let people know, in a compassionate way, what you need to feel balanced and at peace. Be open to listening to others’ perspectives, but stand firm in your position. You might say something like, “I understand you need help with this project, but in order to do my best work, I need to limit meetings to 30 minutes. I hope you understand.”
Don’t feel bad for needing to set boundaries. Your limits are valid and necessary for your wellbeing. Learn to recognize the signs that your boundaries need reinforcement-feeling irritable, resentful, or taken advantage of are clues you may need to pull back and re-center yourself. Be flexible-some days you may have more to give than others. The key is tuning into yourself and honoring what you genuinely need.
Protecting your energy through healthy boundaries is a continuous practice. But by making it a habit, you’ll find yourself feeling more at ease and connected to your true self. And when you’re in that place of stability, you’ll have so much more to offer to the world. Focus on filling your own cup first-you deserve that kind of self-care.
9. Expressing Your Authentic Self Without Apology
Being authentic is about honoring who you really are – your essence, values and truth. For me, that means showing up fully in each moment and embracing all parts of myself, even the imperfect ones. It’s accepting that I’m a complex, multi-dimensional human being.
When I started on my journey to authenticity, I struggled with caring too much what others thought of me. I tried to bend myself into who I thought people wanted me to be. But over time, I realized that dimming my light to please others only led to feelings of resentment, anxiety and disconnection from my true self.
Stop Apologizing for Who You Are. I had to learn to stop apologizing for who I am and make no excuses for it. I am imperfectly perfect, flaws and all. I don’t need to earn the right to exist or to take up space in this world. I have just as much a right to be here as anyone else. Recognizing my inherent worth has been profoundly liberating.
Be Unapologetically You. Being authentic means showing up as unapologetically you – quirks, imperfections, passions, gifts, and all. It means honoring your truth and values, even if others don’t understand them. Don’t let self-doubt or fear of judgment hold you back from boldly being who you are. The people who really matter will appreciate you for it.
Find Your Voice and Speak Your Truth. An essential part of being authentic is finding your voice and speaking your truth with courage and compassion. Share what really matters to you, stand up for what you believe in, set clear boundaries and say “no” when you need to. Make sure your words and actions align with your core values and priorities in life.
Living authentically is not always easy, but it is so worth it. When you express the real you without apology, you will attract more of the right people and opportunities into your life. You will feel empowered, at peace with yourself, and free to fully enjoy each moment. That is true self-care.

- Set boundaries – Politely say “no” to requests that pull you away from your self-care. People will understand once they see your wellbeing is a priority.

- Rely on internal validation – Learn to trust your own judgment. Listen to your intuition and inner voice of guidance.
- Avoid people-pleasing – Do what feels right to you, not what you think will win someone’s approval. You don’t need anyone’s validation but your own.
- Practice mindfulness meditation – This can help you let go of thoughts of comparing yourself and dwell less on seeking external validation.
- Remind yourself: You are enough – Repeat this to yourself daily. You have value simply by being you. There will always be someone “better”, so stop playing that game.
