What Does It Mean to “Find Yourself”?
“Find yourself” means discovering your true identity and purpose in life. For me, it was a journey of self-exploration that led to greater clarity and fulfillment.
Looking inward: I started by reflecting on my core values, priorities, and passions. What activities energize me? What issues do I care deeply about? What are my key strengths, talents, and dreams? These reflections helped me better understand my authentic self.

Listening for inspiration: I also paid close attention to moments of inspiration, or “divine whispers.” Those flashes of insight that excite you and fill you with a sense of purpose They often point to your true calling. For me, it was realizing my passion for writing and helping others.
Following your purpose: Finally, I pursued opportunities that aligned with my purpose. I started freelancing as a writer, created an online course, and began life coaching. These meaningful pursuits made me feel fully alive and like I was living true to myself.

Signs You May Be Losing Touch With Your True Self
Have you felt like you’ve lost touch with the “real you” lately? As life moves fast, it’s easy to get caught up in the daily grind and forget what matters to you. But don’t worry—there are signs you can look for to make sure you’re staying true to yourself!
One major sign is that you’re not engaging in hobbies or activities you genuinely enjoy. For me, that’s things like writing stories, photography, and cooking. If I go too long without making time for my passions, I start to feel drained and unmotivated. So try setting aside time each week to do something you love.
Another indication is if you’re constantly seeking approval from others. I used to worry so much about what people thought of me that I molded myself to please them. But now I focus on listening to my inner voice. Try standing up for what you believe in; you’ll feel empowered and more confident.
Lastly, watch out for feelings of resentment or lack of purpose. For a while, I felt stuck in a job I didn’t find meaningful. I made a change and now feel inspired and driven by my work. Think about what motivates or excites you, then take steps toward more fulfilling goals.
The key is making self-care a priority. Engage in self-reflection, set boundaries, and pursue your dreams. Stay connected to your core values and the activities that bring you joy. When you nourish your true self, life feels more vibrant and rewarding. Rediscover who you are; you deserve to be happy!
When I Need to Find Myself
Finding yourself is not a one-time event, but a lifelong journey of discovery and growth. You are not a fixed entity, but a dynamic and evolving being who can change and adapt to different situations and challenges. You have the power to shape your own identity and destiny, but you also need to be open to learning from others and from your own experiences.
1. Letting Go of Societal Expectations and Other People’s Dreams
Society places so many expectations on us from an early age. Our parents, teachers, and community leaders all have hopes and dreams for who we’ll become. The problem is that they aren’t always our hopes and dreams. At some point, you have to let go of what others want for you and pursue your purpose and passions.
For me, that meant quitting a stable job as an accountant to start my own business. My family thought I was crazy to give up that security, but I knew in my soul I wasn’t meant to crunch numbers for the rest of my life. I wanted to build something of my own, even if it was risky. When I finally took that leap of faith, it felt like finally coming up for fresh air after being underwater.
Now, I’m not saying you have to do something as drastic as quitting your job. Letting go of societal expectations can be as simple as not attending an event you’re “supposed” to go to in favor of a quiet night at home or pursuing a hobby your parents don’t understand. The point is to stop living for the approval and accolades of others and start nurturing your needs and following your inner compass.
Some other ways to let go of what others want for you:
- Set boundaries. Learn to say no in a kind but firm way.
- Tune out the critics. Stop worrying so much about what others will think of your choices.
- Evaluate advice objectively. Consider the source and determine if their counsel aligns with your priorities and values.
- Stop seeking validation. Do things because they matter to you, not to impress people or gain their approval.
- Forgive yourself for past mistakes. Let go of regrets and forgive yourself for choices that didn’t honor your true self. Today is a new day!
When you let go of society’s expectations, you free yourself to become who you were meant to be. You uncover your unique gifts, talents, and purpose. You start living an authentic life filled with meaning and fulfillment. The journey may not always be easy, but it will be worth it. Take that first step—you owe it to yourself!
2. Turning Inwards Through Meditation and Self-Reflection
. When I first started my journey of self-discovery, I didn’t know where to begin. I decided to start small by setting aside just 5–10 minutes a day to sit in silence, breathe deeply, and reflect.
Meditation: A Window Into Your True Self
Meditation is like a window into your inner world. At first, my mind was filled with chatter and noise. But over time, as I stuck with it, my mind began to quiet. In those moments of stillness, insights about myself would arise. I started to gain clarity on my values, priorities, and the sources of both joy and angst in my life.
Some days, meditation felt frustrating when I couldn’t quiet my mind. But I realized this was also revealing—I saw how much my happiness depended on controlling situations and chasing accomplishments. I learned to accept whatever arose and be gentle with myself. Over weeks and months, meditation helped me peel back layer after layer to reveal my true self beneath the surface.
Self-Reflection: Looking Within for Answers
In addition to meditation, self-reflection has been hugely important in my journey. I started journaling and asking myself deep questions about my life, my relationships, and the experiences that shaped me. I took long walks in nature, which provided mental space for reflections to arise. I found a therapist and life coach to help guide me through reflective processes.
Through meditation and reflection, I uncovered parts of myself that had long been hidden or suppressed. I discovered my true passions, values, and purpose. The answers were inside me all along; I just needed to slow down and look within. This inner journey has been challenging but rewarding. I’m still learning and growing, but I feel more centered and confident in who I am, and I feel a deeper connection to something greater than myself.
The journey inward is a lifelong process. But by starting with small steps like meditation, reflection, and journaling, you’ll be well on your way to finding your true self. Be patient and kind with yourself, ask deep questions, and listen for the answers that arise from within.

4. Choose environments that fuel your passions.
I thrive in spaces that energize me, like local coffee shops where I can people-watch and write or scenic natural areas where I feel inspired. Seek out places that spark your creativity and interests. Spending time in environments not suited to you will only drain your energy and motivation.
Pursue work you find meaningful.
Do things that matter to you and play to your strengths. I left a job that didn’t align with my values for freelance writing work I find impactful. Find or create work that motivates and challenges you in healthy ways. Your time is a precious resource, so spend it on things that contribute value to yourself and others.
Surround yourself with people who share your values.
The relationships in our lives greatly influence us, for better or worse. I’ve built friendships with people whose company I genuinely enjoy and who support me in becoming my best self. Make the effort to connect with like-minded people who treat you well and share your priorities in life. Their positive influence will help affirm that you’re on the right path.
Reflect regularly on your progress and direction.
It’s easy to get caught up in pursuing goals and lose sight of the bigger picture. I schedule time each week to pause and evaluate what’s working, what isn’t, and whether I need to make any course corrections to stay on track with my purpose and priorities. Constant self-reflection and adjustment are keys to making sure your life remains aligned with your true self.
The more you shape your life to fit who you are, the more fulfilled and confident you’ll feel. This rewarding process of aligning your lifestyle with your true identity will lead to a life of meaning, passion, and joy. Keep exploring, stay true to yourself, and enjoy the journey!
5. Defining Your Life’s Purpose and Setting Meaningful Goals
Finding my life’s purpose has been an exciting journey of self-discovery! I started by looking inward at my core values, strengths, talents, and passions.
Values
What principles do you hold dearest? For me, it’s compassion, creativity, and courage. My purpose should align with these.
Strengths and talents
What skills or gifts do you have that energize you? I’m a natural communicator who loves bringing people together and facilitating meaningful conversations. My strengths point me toward a purpose involving teaching, public speaking, or community building.
Passions
What topics or activities make you lose track of time? I’m passionate about personal growth, nature, and travel. A purpose incorporating these would fulfill me. With this self-knowledge in hand, I did some soul-searching to uncover the impact I want to have and who I want to serve. I asked myself questions like:
- What excites or angers me about the state of the world?
- What groups of people or communities do I want to support?
- If I could resolve one problem or meet one need, what would it be?
My answers led me to realize I want to help young people develop self-confidence and life skills.

7. Maintaining Your Sense of Self While Embracing Growth and Change
Staying true to yourself is so important, but that doesn’t mean you can’t grow and evolve. Change is inevitable in life, and fighting it will only lead to unhappiness. The key is to embrace change while maintaining your core values and priorities.
As I’ve navigated life’s ups and downs, I’ve learned that the only constant is change. Jobs change, friends come and go, hobbies evolve, and interests shift. But at my core, I know who I am—I value kindness, humor, creativity, and adventure. No matter what happens in life, I can rely on those traits to guide me.
When facing major life changes, it’s normal to feel some anxiety or fear of the unknown. The questions may flood your mind: Will I still be me? Will I lose myself in the process? Take a deep breath and remember—you get to choose how changes shape you. Stay focused on your values and the qualities that make you uniquely you. Make a list of what matters to you and refer to it often.
As new opportunities or circumstances unfold, evaluate how they align with your priorities. Don’t be afraid to say no if something doesn’t feel right. On the other hand, be open to new experiences that spark your interest or passion. Step out of your comfort zone, and you may just discover a new aspect of yourself!
Growth and change are healthy parts of life. Embrace them, but do so on your terms. Check in with yourself regularly to ensure that you’re staying true to your values and purpose. Make self-care a priority, engage in hobbies you love, and spend time with people who appreciate you for who you are. Life may throw you curveballs, but you have the power to steer how they influence your sense of self. Be open, yet stay grounded. Grow, yet remain anchored in who and what matters most to you.
