I have a confession to make. I sometimes have a hard time being honest with myself. We all tell white lies or pretend like something is okay when it isn’t. And it’s not always bad. Sometimes we just don’t want to deal with something head-on. But truth be told, honesty should always be our compass in life.
Nobody expects us to be perfect. We’re humans after all, but learning the power of self-honesty can have a huge impact on our lives and overall wellbeing. That’s why I want to share my experience of how self-honesty has changed my life and how it can benefit you too! Ways We Lie to Ourselves Without Realizing It
One of the biggest problems we have with self-honesty is that we often don’t realize when we are lying to ourselves. We need to be aware of the common ways that we lie to ourselves to learn how to be honest with ourselves.
There are many paths our thoughts can take us that lead us away from the truth, but these three are especially common:
When we experience a traumatic event, our brain often creates coping mechanisms in an attempt to protect us from feeling overwhelmed by emotions. One of these coping mechanisms is pattern interruption. This is when our mind tricks us into thinking something is true when it really isn’t.
For example, if you were bullied in grade school, your subconscious may tell you that everyone dislikes you instead of realizing that it was only a few people who behaved unkindly towards you.
Rationalization is when we lie by overthinking and trying to come up with logical explanations for an event or situation, which can often lead us away from the truth. For instance, after arguing with someone close to you, your mind may attempt to convince yourself that they were in the wrong and you were right, even if that’s not actually true.
Denial is probably one of the most popular forms of lying we do to ourselves because it can make uncomfortable truths easier to handle. For example, denying reality can allow us to go about our lives without facing difficult or painful truths about our present situation or past experiences.
These types of lies make it very hard for us to tell the truth about ourselves and the situations around us.
How to Identify When You’re Not Being Honest with Yourself
Oftentimes, we are not even aware when we are not being honest with ourselves. Learning to recognize when you’re in this situation is very important. Because it lead to being able to confront it and make an effort to be more self-honest. One way to do this is by recognizing patterns in your behavior.
For instance, think about the last time someone else wronged you, but even though it very likely wasn’t, you convinced yourself that it was really your fault. Or maybe you found yourself feeling guilty for something that was out of your control because, deep down, you were trying to protect someone else’s feelings. In both cases, you were essentially lying to yourself about the reality of the situation.
By knowing what behaviors can stem from being dishonest with yourself and learning how to recognize them, you can start actively examining and challenging them whenever they come up. Adopting the following four steps can help:
Step 1: cultivate self-awareness.
Start off by cultivating self-awareness. Taking time for self-reflection is a great starting point, as it helps you gain clarity about your feelings and thoughts. Practicing mindfulness and meditation helps too, as it allows you to slow down and observe your innermost emotions.
Step 2: Confront Your Inner Truth
Once you become more in tune with your inner truth, don’t be afraid to confront any hard topics or changes that need to be made. Being brutally honest with yourself is essential if you want to achieve the highest levels of truthfulness with yourself. This means accepting even uncomfortable truths in order to take positive action and make changes where necessary.
Step 3: Practice Self-Acceptance
Sometimes this journey can be difficult, so it’s important to learn how to practice self-acceptance. Acknowledge any weaknesses or mistakes without judgment, as this will create an opening through which new truths may emerge.
Strive for continuous growth instead, as this will empower you to move forward in life successfully and confidently.

Finally, take an honest look at your values and integrate them into your daily reflections. Doing so will help ensure that your decisions reflect these values; if something isn’t aligned with them.
5 Common Barriers to Self-Honesty
When it comes to self-honesty, the biggest challenge many of us face is actually letting ourselves tell the truth. There are a number of reasons why we often don’t follow through on this; these are some of the main barriers that I’ve encountered on my own journey:
Fear can be a powerful force, and most of us have moments where we’re afraid to be open with ourselves. We may fear what truths will emerge or what changes we’ll have to make in our lives if we go down the path of self-honesty.
2. Negative Beliefs
Often, negative beliefs from our past can hold us back from telling ourselves the truth. These beliefs may revolve around our worthiness, capabilities, or ability to change.
3. Lack of clarity
Sometimes, it can feel like talking to yourself without any clear path forward. We may simply not know how to set an intention for honest dialog or how to make use of this newfound knowledge in our everyday lives.
Admitting that we’re wrong can sometimes feel like too heavy a pill to swallow, especially when we’ve convinced ourselves that we’re right no matter what evidence says otherwise. Our pride stands strong in these moments and can stop us in our tracks before any change can occur.
5. Not inhabiting our power
Not understanding and not believing in our power is also a common barrier; we may think that others have more power over us than ourselves and keep holding back out of fear of retribution or punishment if we open up about something sensitive or controversial.
At the end of the day, the most powerful relationship you can have is with yourself. If you allow yourself to be honest and open, you will be able to move forward in life, gain clarity, and find peace in the process. Self-honesty isn’t always easy, and it might require a bit of discomfort. But if you are able to embrace it, you will be able to create a better relationship with yourself and reap the many rewards that come from telling yourself the truth.
