What is assertiveness

What is assertiveness
What is assertiveness

Assertiveness is a type of communication that involves the expression of thoughts and feelings in an honest, direct, and forthright way. It is a way of communicating with others without being defensive or aggressive. Assertiveness involves expressing your feelings openly without fear or shame or guilt, whatever they may be.

Assertiveness, Passive and Aggressive

Assertiveness

The assertive person can express their feelings, thoughts, and needs effectively. They do not let the other person’s behavior determine their behavior. They have learned that it is better to ask for what they want rather than to sit there and wait for permission or approval from others.

When someone is passive, they tend to ignore or avoid confrontation. They do not want to tell others what they think or feel about something because they feel as though it will cause problems for them or others around them.

Passive

The passive person does not take responsibility for their actions and feelings. They blame others for their mistakes and failures. The passive person often tries to get others to make decisions or blames others for not doing something they wish someone would do for them.

Passive behavior might also mean just accepting things as they come without effort to make things better for yourself or effort on your part to make things better for yourself or for others around you.

Aggressive

The aggressive person expects others to obey his or her wishes and demands immediate obedience, regardless of whether the other person feels.

They may even yell at others during an argument which can cause a lot of tension between them and their partner/friend/family member etc. Aggression is usually not helpful in resolving problems but can be hurtful when used in a relationship between two people with strong feelings for each other.

What is confidence

What is confidence
What is confidence

Confidence is the feeling you have when you believe in yourself, your abilities, and your future. Confidence can be developed and built up over time.

Confidence is something that everyone craves. It makes us feel good to know that we are capable of doing what we want to do and being who we want to be.

You should never forget that confidence comes from within and is not just a product of external factors like looks, wealth, or fame.

Confidence is important because it gives you the belief that you can achieve anything if you set your mind to it. This belief will help you persevere through any situation and give you the strength to get things done.

Importance of assertiveness and Self-confidence to us

We all can be assertive and confident. It’s part of our personality and is a great way to build relationships with people.

We can all be more assertive, but it doesn’t mean we should be rude or aggressive in our communications. There are different ways of being assertive and confident. And also, each person has their own style.

Being assertive means being honest, direct, open, and clear about your thoughts and feelings. It’s not just about what you’re saying but how you say it.

Being assertive is about being honest with yourself first before talking to others because if you aren’t honest with yourself then no one else will believe what you’re trying to say or do anything for you. Because they know that deep down inside something is wrong with what you’re saying or doing.

Being confident means believing in yourself whether other people believe in you or not because if everyone believed in themselves then there would be no need for anyone.

These two qualities help us to be able to understand ourselves better. When we can understand our feelings, we can also understand the feelings of others. We can also express our feelings and make them known to others.

Why Assertiveness Is Important

Assertiveness is important because it allows people to control their lives. When people don’t listen to what you say and react in whatever way seems most comfortable for them, they are being assertive.

Assertiveness is the art of getting what you want through communication. It’s important to understand that when someone is assertive, they take responsibility for their actions and decisions without feeling guilty or ashamed about them.

They aren’t blaming anyone else for how they feel or how they act; they’re just doing what feels right to them.

It also allows people to work toward making positive changes in their lives instead of just hoping things will improve.

  1. Assertiveness is a self-confident way of expressing your feelings and opinions.
  2. Assertiveness is an effective way to help you get what you want in life.
  3. Assertiveness can increase your chances of success and happiness and improve your relationships with others.
  4. Assertiveness will also help you overcome any fears or insecurities that prevent you from succeeding in life or making the best decisions for you.
  5. You can express yourself clearly and confidently.
  6. Assertiveness is important because it helps you get what you want, both in your personal life and in your professional life.
  7. Assertiveness helps you to become a better person and a better leader.

Why Self-confidence is important

Self-confidence is one of the most important aspects of leadership. The ability to be confident, assertive, and, self-assured means you can get respect from others, manage people effectively and make decisions that will benefit your team.

Without self-confidence, you may find it difficult to take risks or speak up in meetings. You may lack the courage to ask for feedback and suggestions – especially when they’re positive – or do something different from what has been done in the past.

  1. Self-confidence helps you to be resilient and bounce back quickly from setbacks or criticism.
  2. It gives you inner strength and confidence which will enable you to face challenges head-on with optimism and positivity.
  3. It can help you feel calm and relaxed in difficult situations.
  4. It can make you more likely to try new things and take risks which is important if you want to get ahead in life.
  5. Self-confidence is also essential in helping you to manage your career development, as well as your personal life.
  6. Self-confidence will help you achieve your dreams and goals in life, whether they’re big or small.

How to become more assertive and confident

How to become more assertive and confident
How to become more assertive and confident

When you are assertive and confident, people will notice. They will not only notice that you are confident, but also that you have confidence in yourself.

1. Write down your goals

Note down and make sure you have a clear understanding of what you want to achieve in life.

2. Pick areas where you want to improve

Pick areas (most important) where you want to improve, for example, communication skills, time management, or getting along with others.

3. Identify one specific way

Identify specific ways in which you can improve in each area, for example, by speaking up when someone is late for an appointment, by talking about problems at work, and by not interrupting people when they are speaking.

4. Take action.

Make a plan to work on these areas over the next five weeks and commit yourself to working on them each day until they are fixed.

Different ways to build assertiveness and self- confidence

Different ways to build assertiveness and self- confidence
Different ways to build assertiveness and self- confidence

Let’s look at the different ways you can become more assertive and confident:

1. Don’t avoid people.

It is okay to speak up when you disagree with someone or if something is not working out the way you want it to in a relationship.

2. Don’t allow others to make decisions for you.

Don’t allow others to make decisions for you without giving them feedback first. If someone makes a decision that affects your life such as quitting job (before deciding whether to follow through with their decision), take the time to ask them why they made that decision and what benefits they expected.

3. Be accountable for your actions and decisions.

  • Take responsibility for your actions and decisions
  • Don’t blame others or external factors for your shortcomings or problems
  • Don’t make excuses, but acknowledge them when they happen (and learn from them)
  • Be honest and open about your shortcomings. So, that you can work on improving yourself instead of pretending to be perfect all the time

4. Learn to say “no.”

It is one of the most important skills you can develop as an assertive person. It’s okay to say no, and it’s okay to say yes. Saying maybe is also a good thing; saying nothing also works.

There’s never a reason for someone else to be in charge of your life or what happens with your time. So, learn how to take control of this situation by asking what makes sense for both parties involved.

5. Challenge yourself.

  • Try new things.
  • Be able to express yourself confidently and clearly, especially when you’re surround with people who don’t know you very well or have never seen you in action before (like at work). When someone asks if they can do something, say no if it’s inappropriate or not something that would benefit the team as a whole; say yes if it’s something that would benefit all involved parties equally and would make everyone happy.

6. Be open-minded to new and diverse perspectives.

Being open-minded is a key to success. It helps you learn and grow and respect others’ ideas and viewpoints. A lack of open-mindedness can lead to closed-mindedness, which will make it difficult for you to interact with other people who may not share your point of view or values.

Closed-mindedness is harmful because it keeps us from seeing all sides of an issue; this prevents us from understanding our own biases and prejudices. It also makes it harder for us to solve problems that affect others.

The best way forward is by being aware and accepting that there are many different ways of thinking.

Conclusion

We hope this article has given you some insight into the importance of assertiveness and has helped increase your confidence. As we said at the beginning of this post, assertiveness can be a difficult skill to master but with practice and perseverance, you will be able to stand up for yourself with confidence in no time.
